A major milestone in the construction of a new Travelodge hotel and retail outlets in the heart of Wimbledon has been marked with members of the project team getting together for the first time.
Working with multiple land ownerships, Reef Group gained consent for the development of a new 177 Travelodge hotel and two new restaurants 100 metres from Wimbledon station in South London.
The new rooftop of the Travelodge hotel was the venue for the first face to face get together since building work started onsite in June 2020 and Covid restrictions were lifted. Representatives from Reef Group and Travelodge joined with main contractor, Barnes Construction, architects Mountford Piggott, quantity surveyors Gardiner & Theobald, and structural engineers GD Partnership, to mark the progress that is being made and take a tour of the development.
Will Rohleder, Development Director from Reef Group is delighted with the progress onsite and said:
“Reef Group achieved consent for the building through careful dialogue with the local planning authority and a sensitive approach to the facade and roof treatment. This approach saw the design of a large contemporary building with an active ground floor frontage that when completed in the summer will contribute positively to the streetscape.”
Bob Steward is Joint Managing Director at Barnes Construction and is pleased with the progress being made. He commented:
“It was great to finally be able to get together and spend time face-to-face with all the teams involved in the project. Construction is going well, and with parts of the scaffolding starting to come down, you can now get a real feel for how the finished development will look when it is completed in the summer.”
Paul Hill, Travelodge Construction Project Manager said:
“We are very excited to be opening our first Travelodge hotel in Wimbledon Town Centre later this year. This opening will be our 79th hotel in London and it will also be one of our first new- build budget-luxe design hotels, featuring our new premium look and feel design.”
