Edward Peake's New Sports Hall Taking Shape as Project Reaches Halfway Point - Barnes Construction

Ceremonial bricks have been laid at Edward Peake CofE School in Biggleswade to mark the halfway point in the construction of its new sports hall.

The works are part of Central Bedfordshire Councils ongoing investment in the Biggleswade area as part of the Three to Two Tier Programme, which saw the school transform from a middle school to a secondary school in September 2024.

A new multi-use games area (MUGA) has been open since the start of this year, while the new sports hall is set to be completed in the autumn, when it will provide pupils with more access to sports such as badminton, basketball, cricket, dance, aerobics and yoga in a brand-new modern space.  

After ceremonial bricks were laid to mark the completion of the sports hall’s brickwork, Cllr Steve Owen, Executive Member for Children’s Services and Community Safety at Central Bedfordshire Council, said:

“It’s fantastic to see such progress being made. When we were last here in December the steel frame had just been erected, but now pupils will be able to see more clearly what their new sports hall will look like.

We expect it will be a real asset to Edward Peake School and will help deliver the high-quality facilities young people in Biggleswade deserve. I look forward to seeing the finished building later this year.”

Edward Peake School Headteacher, Zoë Linington, said:

“We are really looking forward to receiving our new facilities. Barnes Construction has made excellent progress and the project is on track. Year 9 have selected their options and are looking forward to using the new facilities as they begin their GCSE courses. In terms of school time, this is only three weeks away! It’s such an exciting time to be at Edward Peake.”

Also, as part of the project the refurbishment of the existing sports hall has begun and, from next month, work on the steel structure will start. Once complete, that will create six classrooms, for improved art and design-technology provision, plus a computer suite.
