Traditionally male dominated and less flexible, the industry is continuing to make strides to promote opportunities for women in construction through a variety of means. At Barnes, we are committed to ensuring that we can offer attractive, flexible career options to continue to appeal to a wide demographic of candidates.
We are proud of the excellent female role models in our business who help lead the way to any women thinking about a career in the industry.
Heidi Finbow, Senior Estimator
Heidi’s journey in construction spans over three decades, during which she has broken stereotypes and shaped her path in the industry. Starting her career as an Architectural Technologist, Heidi’s love for design drove her forward, eventually leading her to become a Senior Estimator at Barnes Construction. As an Estimator, Heidi plays a crucial role in securing projects.
“As women, we have a unique opportunity to turn the page for a new generation of thinking & collaboration in the construction industry,” Heidi says.
Heidi found a love for numbers, despite receiving a D in her Maths GCSE. Through perseverance and part-time study, Heidi earned a BSc Honours Degree in Quantity Surveying. “Let your strengths create opportunities, even if they are not in your career plan,” she advises.
At Barnes Construction, Heidi has advanced her skills through professional memberships, training initiatives, and diverse project experiences. “Barnes has encouraged me to join the MCIOB, attend regular CPD events, Building Regulation and H&S updates, attend training in Cad Measure and Estimating software and generally be involved in a large range of different projects,” she explains. “This variety in projects introduces new skills and technology so even though it’s a cliché’, I ‘learn something new every day’!”
Among Heidi’s proudest achievements are the diverse projects she has been involved in, especially her contributions to several hospices.
Katie Smith, Management Trainee
Starting with us in 2021, Katie is currently completing her degree in Construction Management alongside her rotations within the business. As a younger member of staff, Katie is starting her career in the industry showing a particular interest in Bid Management and Pre-Contracts. Katie is an excellent role model for other young females considering a career in the industry, and has attended numerous skills shows and careers fairs to spread the word!
“Think outside the box, the construction industry is not limited to muddy trades!”
“Be open-minded…Apply for lots of schemes and do not get disheartened if you don’t get through on your first application.”
Our Management Trainee route offers diverse roles beyond traditional site-based positions. Our goal is to attract top talent by fostering a flexible and supportive work environment where everyone can thrive.
Samantha Todd, Marketing Assistant
Transitioning from a legal background to the construction industry, Sam found her niche in proposals and marketing, drawn by the sector’s dynamic nature and opportunities for personal development.
“One of the aspects I enjoy most about my role in construction is the sense of accomplishment that comes from seeing a project come to life from the ground up and being able to write about this in a project case study.”
“I believe that every achievement, big or small, is worth celebrating as it reflects the hard work and determination to progress,” she notes.
Sam’s advice to women considering a career in construction: “Don’t be afraid to speak up and assert yourself. Your voice and perspective are valuable,” she adds. “Be confident in yourself and your abilities.”
At Barnes Construction, we prioritise inclusivity by offering various hybrid arrangements, part-time, and full-time roles to support all staff’s career paths.
“Since starting a family, my role offers the flexibility of working part-time after returning from maternity leave,” Sam says.
Heidi, Sam, and Katie are passionate advocates for the industry and the many unique opportunities that a career in construction can present. As the industry grapples with skills shortages, it is vital that we continue to attract the best candidates. As a flexible and supportive employer, we hope that we are able to continue to attract many more Heidi, Sam and Katies to bolster our growing business for the future.
