Barnes Construction welcomes its 100th Management Trainee - Barnes Construction

We are celebrating reaching a major milestone in our long-running Management Trainee Programme with the appointment of our 100th management trainee and have marked the occasion with a photograph spanning nearly five decades of talent development.

This month, we welcomed Jake Parker from Kesgrave High School and Connor Stewart from One Sixth Form College. Their arrival marks a significant moment in our company’s history, which dates back to 1979 when our Management Trainee Programme was established, just one year after we started trading as Landlink Barnes.

To celebrate the achievement, we have captured a special photograph bringing together the first three management trainees recruited by the business and its latest intake. The image features Chris Bruce, who joined as the first Management Trainee in 1979, alongside Stephen Rose, who was the second Management Trainee, and Mark Bailey, who was the third. They are standing with Jake and Connor as the next generation begins its construction careers.

Over the past 47 years, the programme has provided a pathway into the construction industry for young people from across Suffolk and the wider region. Many former trainees have gone on to build long and successful careers with us, progressing into senior leadership positions.

Chris Bruce, who was our first-ever management trainee, went on to become Pre-Contracts Divisional Director before stepping back from the board earlier this year. Stephen Rose is now Chief Buyer and Mark Bailey is a Divisional Director sitting on the Board.

Today, the programme continues to play a vital role in developing future leaders for the business. Trainees gain experience working across all areas of the company, combining practical site and office-based learning with academic study towards a BSc (Hons) degree.

Simon Severwright, our Divisional Surveying Director, who himself is a former management trainee, said:

“Reaching our 100th management trainee is a proud moment for everyone at Barnes Construction. What makes the milestone even more special is being able to bring together some of the people who started the journey with us nearly five decades ago and those who are just beginning their careers today.

“The programme has been a huge success for the business over many years and has helped us develop talented individuals who have gone on to become managers, senior leaders and directors. Investing in young people has always been part of our culture, and it is something we remain deeply committed to.

“We are delighted to welcome Jake and Connor to the team and look forward to supporting them as they develop their skills, gain experience across the business and build rewarding careers in the construction industry.”

We currently have a number of management trainees progressing through the programme, which provides hands-on experience across departments including surveying, estimating, planning, site management and project delivery.
