The six-storey steel frame is supported by piled foundations, ranging between 13m and 19m deep into the ground. The frame was then infilled with a Metsec system, with the exterior finished in red bricks. Internally we fitted out all areas, including installation of bathroom “pods”. These off site manufactured units are quick to install and also practical for maintenance and cleaning long-term.
At Barnes, we have extensive experience delivering projects on constrained sites, and the Travelodge Chiswick development was a prime example. The building footprint occupied nearly the entire site, with the structure positioned between two substantial existing buildings and access limited to a busy high street. These conditions required a carefully coordinated logistics strategy, particularly around the installation and removal of a tower crane. Our team successfully navigated the complex approval process involving multiple stakeholders, including highways authorities. Notably, the crane removal presented an even greater challenge, necessitating an overnight operation and a full road closure, which was managed seamlessly by our team, in conjunction with our trusted subcontractor.
We were proud to see our team’s dedication to managing a highly challenging site recognised at the 2025 Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) Awards, where they received a Bronze Award. The CCS Awards celebrate exceptional sites, organisations, and individuals who demonstrate an outstanding commitment to the Code of Considerate Practice, with a focus on Community, Environment, and Workforce. This recognition reflects the high standards upheld throughout the project and the professionalism shown by our team under complex conditions.
