Project Description

The project also included constructing a new two-storey building, refurbishing a ground-floor department, and reconfiguration of the bus loop. The work was carried out in five phases, to enhance the hospital’s facilities while minimising disruption to daily operations.

Phase 1: Retail works, including the construction of 3 units and the fit-out of the Stock Shop (clothing store). A new main entrance and reception area to the South Wards were also completed.

Phase 2: Construction of a new Urgent Treatment Centre and associated MEP infrastructure, including a generator and substation compound.

Phase 3: Refurbishment of the old South Ward entrance to form a new Emergency Department/treatment facility.

Phase 4: Fit-out of the first floor UTC facility, transforming it into 3 new theatres with associated treatment areas.

Phase 5: Construction of a new Post-Operative Care Unit and refurbishment of one of the existing South Ward theatres.

Although working in a live hospital environment posed certain challenges, such as restricted access, deliveries on blue-light routes and close proximity to active wards, we collaborated closely with the Trust and made sure that every detail was planned carefully to ensure a successful outcome.

“I worked very closely with the team on site for approximately 3 years and was extremely impressed with the approach to quality and providing and customer focus. Communication between Barnes, the Design team and us the client was excellent. I found working with the Barnes team at Ipswich Hospital to be a real pleasure. I would welcome Barnes back on site as they have provided excellent service and value for money to the hospital.”
