Schoolchildren help build the future of local hospice care

21 March 2019
On Thursday 21st March, a local junior school joined us at our site for the new state-of-the-art adult’s hospice for South East Essex.

Pupils from Bournes Green School, Southend, joined Havens Hospices and Barnes Construction for the day at the new Fair Havens site which is being built opposite Priory Park in Prittlewell. The 15-schoolchildren from years three to six were invited to come to the site as representatives of the school’s council to learn about bricklaying and even give it a go themselves using bricks that will eventually be used for the hospice’s In Patient Unit.

As well as learning about construction and getting their hands dirty the Bournes Green pupils got to learn about what hospice care is and why Havens Hospices and the local community need a new Fair Havens. They learnt about the 16 new in-patient bedrooms, increased Day Hospice services and additional family support meaning the charity will be able to care for twice as many patients and families.

Shelley Crumbie, Year 6 Teacher at Bournes Green said

“It’s been a fantastic afternoon, the children have really enjoyed learning about what goes in to large-scale construction and about the difference the new Fair Havens will make to the community; I think it really does help them to understand why as a school we support local charities like Havens Hospices when they get to see what the money is for.
“It was very exciting that they got to be a part of a build that is going to be making such a difference for so many more families from across Southend, Rochford and Castle Point and I’m sure knowing they helped lay the first bricks will become a treasured memory for them all.”

David Faichney, Contracts Manager for Barnes Construction who was on hand to help the children gain new bricklaying skills added,

“It has been really great to get the kids involved today and show them a few building skills, you never know a few of them may even pursue construction as a career. The build is going well and we’re on track with the programme we set out. We’re in the process of constructing the external walls for the in-patient unit and we will complete all the pre-cast concrete flooring for the hospice by the end of next week.”
