The project delivered the remodelling and refurbishment of Christ’s College’s existing Boathouse including the demolition of an old boat store, construction of a two-storey extension, and refurbishment of the remaining areas.
The new accommodation includes ground floor boat storage bays and new training, gym, toilet and changing facilities to the second floor.
The extension was constructed using piled foundations and a steel frame, with the building envelope comprising facing brickwork, glazed sliding screens and timber brise soleil. Internally, the building incorporates new robust finishes and energy efficient building services installations.
A significant challenge was encountered when it was identified that the existing building would require unplanned underpinning works, representing a 7-week programme delay. We re-sequenced planned activities to work in unaffected areas and maintain overall progress. As a result, the impact of the additional works on the programme were fully mitigated.
SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
We maintained regular contact with the community throughout, distributing monthly newsletters to over 30 local homes and businesses to appraise them of project progress, as well as planned deliveries and vehicle movements. The site’s location next to the River Cam also required us to liaise with the Environment Agency regularly.
“Barnes Construction have been excellent throughout the project bringing a collaborative approach to all site problems and completed what has been a complex project well”
Martin Spooner, Christ’s College
