Bursar scales the heights to top out new dining hall - Barnes Construction

Bursar, Deborah Griffin OBE has taken part in an “impromptu” event to mark the completion of the concrete frame for the new dining hall being built by Barnes Construction at Homerton College in Cambridge. Fortunately, she has a head for heights, as Deborah climbed three ladders, before going up in a small scissor lift to the top of the frame which stands around 14.4 metres from ground level.

The architects for the circa £10m scheme are Fielden Fowles who have delivered an impressive design that celebrates the integrity and inherent beauty of materials and craftsmanship. Constructed around an existing London Plane Tree at the entrance, the new dining hall will have an inverted zinc roof supported by exposed sweet chestnut beams and the whole building will be clad in glazed terracotta units or faience.

As well as Barnes and Fielden Fowles, the construction team comprises Structure Workshop, Max Fordham, Bremner Partnership, and Ingleton Wood.

The project is due for to be completed at the end of 2021.
