We continued our sponsorship of the Sustainable Building category of the Creating the Greenest County Awards, which took place at Snape Maltings on the 17th of July this year. The awards celebrate green initiatives from across the county, recognising schools, communities, individuals, and businesses who place the environment at the heart of their operations.
The Sustainable Building category recognised best practice in sustainability through design, process, and management. The finalists were:
- John and Sarah Barrett, who placed sustainability, innovation, and sharing best practice at their heart of their self-build project in Yoxford.
- Orchard Barn Environmental Education CIC, who use traditional construction materials on projects as a way of building community, bringing people together to learn how to reduce our impact on the environment.
The winners were John and Sarah Barrett. The judges said that their self-build was “An outstanding project”, commenting that;
“John and Sarah had an ambition of ensuring that the carbon impact of the building was minimised over its lifetime, utilising timber and hemcrete, re-using old building materials, and researching and implementing the highest possible standards in sustainability. They have showcased what can be achieved on a tight budget to create an innovative, affordable and adaptable environmentally sustainable home.”
Accepting the award, John and Sarah Barrett said;
“We're absolutely thrilled to have won this award; somehow the fact that it's so unexpected makes it all the more pleasing. Thank you so much. It seems that often, 'going green' is resisted because it's seen as requiring expensive and negative change, a loss of currently enjoyed comfort and pleasure, but that has not been our experience. Our project was a huge amount of work, but it's also been exciting, stimulating and enormously satisfying. We've had the opportunity to make the most comfortable home we've ever had, and it hasn't cost the earth.
We'd like to congratulate and thank Suffolk County Council for their Creating the Greenest County initiatives and this fantastic event. Wouldn't it be brilliant if we could really make Suffolk the greenest county? Let's spread the word!”
We are proud to have sponsored the award, and to have been part of this important day for Suffolk.
